Captain The Master of Sempill with H.I.H. Prince Regent. William Francis Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill AFC, AFRAeS (1893-1965) was a Scottish peer and record-breaking air pioneer who was later shown to have passed secret information to the Imperial Japanese military before the Second World War. In 1921, Sempill led an official military mission to Japan that showcased the latest British aircraft. In subsequent years he continued to aid the Imperial Japanese Navy in developing its Navy Air Service and began giving military secrets to the Japanese. Although his activities were uncovered by British Intelligence, Sempill was not prosecuted for spying and allowed to continue in public life. Date: 1920s

Step back in time to the 1920s with this rare and fascinating photograph of Captain The Master of Sempill, William Francis Forbes-Sempill, alongside H.I.H. Prince Regent, as they pose proudly in front of a British aircraft during the Sempill British Aviation Mission to Japan. This historic moment marks a significant chapter in the development of international relations between Britain and Japan, as well as a turning point in the life of Lord Sempill himself.
As an air pioneer and Scottish peer, Lord Sempill was instrumental in introducing Japanese military leaders to cutting-edge British aviation technology. His mission aimed to showcase the latest aircraft designs and capabilities, paving the way for future collaborations between the two nations.
What's less well-known is that Lord Sempill's involvement with Japan extended far beyond his official duties. He went on to secretly share sensitive military information with Japanese officials, including details about British aircraft design and tactics. Although his actions were eventually uncovered by British Intelligence, he escaped prosecution and continued to enjoy public prominence.
This remarkable photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in history when international diplomacy was shaped by personal relationships and technological advancements. It also serves as a reminder of the complex web of alliances and rivalries that have defined global politics throughout the 20th century.
